You Can Stop Daydreaming About Life Without a Smartphone

The short version of a long story is that I figured out a way to save money with Verizon by canceling the service, then signing back up and getting St. Louis numbers now that we’ve moved down here

This left Amanda and I phoneless for a week, so we bought burner phones at Walmart for $20/each. I returned to a flip phone with virtually no features outside of calling and painful texting, and traveled with it on a short trip to Memphis on Monday and Tuesday.

The upside is…well, I can’t really think of one, save for the fact that I had a little extra room in my pocket for a retro iPod or something. (Remember when you had to carry a device for communication and a device for music?!?!)

Here are some observations on a (briefly) smartphone-less life.

If your phone stresses you out, you don’t have a phone problem…you have a company problem.

Full disclosure…I worked the entire first weekend at my new company.

And it was awesome. I just so happened to jump into my role at a time when there was a lot of exciting, time sensitive work flying fast & furious. It wound up being a benefit, as completing a couple of big projects bonded me to my coworkers faster and let me see the strength of leadership.

Since then, there have been a couple of moments where I’ve checked in on a project over the weekend. But I enjoy the work…
