To Understand the Debate Over Masks in Public, Look at the Raging Anger Over Diets.
I wish I had better news. I don’t. Science is dead. No, scratch that.
Any common ground around trusting science is completely gone. This has lost recently been personified by the debate around wearing masks in public, which will be mandatory as of tomorrow (07/03) in my current city of St. Louis, MO.
Which may be fine, considering two hairstylists in Missouri with COVID cut hair for 140 customers whole wearing masks, and didn’t spread the disease to one person.
On the flip side, Business Insider reports on the fact that you’re more likely to act stupidly if you are wearing a mask.
Interestingly, research also reveals the tendency to overcompensate when there are "safeguards" in place. Studies have shown that people are more likely to speed when wearing seatbelts. Insurance companies have even discovered that drivers actually become more reckless when there are more safety features on a car.
This mentality may be one reason why so many people wearing face masks could even be detrimental in certain ways. They have convinced themselves that their face masks will protect them. So rather than reducing contact with the public as is suggested, people who are wearing face masks may actually become more likely to travel or interact with people.
